Artist Statement

​Melissa is a retired at-home-mom and caregiver. She is an advocate to an adult son with schizo-effective disorder, and co-conservator to another adult son who has autism and a neurological disorder, which impairs his ability to live independently. She expresses her challenges through images and words on her blog. Melissa spends her time cooking and gardening at her Coachella Valley home with her husband Todd and their three cats, Ziggy, Wesker and Nico. Her Prose piece entitled “Two Worlds” was published in a 2018 issue of Desert Magazine. Her creative non-fiction piece “Oh the Places You Will Go” was published on You Might Need To Hear This. Her drawing “Flannel” was published in LitBop: Art and Literature in the Groove (2024), and other artwork was published in 2024 issues of The Woolf, Indianapolis Review and Mayday.
